As you’ve undoubtedly heard, Whitney Houston died over the weekend at the age of 48. Since this is a wedding blog, and not a sad times blog, let’s look at her happier days – specifically, her wedding to Bobby Brown.
Whitney Houston married Bobby Brown on July 18, 1992, at her home in New Jersey. There were about 800 guests at their wedding. The two met while attending the Soul Train Music Awards in 1989. She was dating Eddie Murphy when they met. I guess Whitney found someone better for party-all-the-time fun. You’re welcome for the link.
Recently, Whitney Houston’s been more infamous for her drug use and erratic behavior than her singing and acting, but in 1992, she was the Biggest Thing Ever. This wedding was a Brad-and-Angelina big deal.

Wedding details from an article in Ebony, thanks to the Classic Whitney site:
Diane Johnson, who has been designing Houston's stage and personal wardrobes for years, co-designed the bridal gown with Marc Bouwer. "Whitney wanted to keep it a very simple design," says Johnson, who runs a boutique in East Orange, N.J., Houston's hometown. "The Lyon lace, imported from France, is the finest lace in the world. The lace made the dress." In addition, Johnson designed the groom's white double-breasted silk tuxedo and the bridesmaids' purple silk floor-length gowns with trains.
Among the attendants were two of Houston closest pals, recording artists Priscilla (CeCe) Winans Love and Perry (Pebbles) Reid. The best man, Brown's brother, Tommy, and the groomsmen, who included Houston's brother, Michael, were all attired in Johnson-designed purple tuxedos with matching purple alligator shoes that were custom-made in Italy. The four flower girls and three ring bearers were adorable in white and lavender.
"Purple is Whitney's favorite color," Johnson emphasizes. "She wanted everything in purple and lavender and white. She even decorates her Christmas tree in purple."
The couple exchanged identical platinum wedding bands. Hers had the words "Love, Bobby" in cut-out script, while his read, "Love, Whitney."
After Brown enthusiastically declared, "I do!!" and the couple were pronounced husband and wife, the guests were awed as seven white doves were released outside the gazebo. The couple then sealed the union with a long, passionate kiss during which Brown literally lifted his bride into the air as the jubilant guests applauded.
Their reception lasted over 12 hours, and the couple went on a lavish honeymoon – a wedding present from their record companies.
I do not like the body language here. He looks like he’s taking possession of her, and her hands are twisted behind her back, as though she’s in handcuffs. Am I reading too much into this? Since they divorced: NO.
The two had one daughter – Bobby Kristina. They separated and divorced in 2006.
Aw, so pretty and 80s! I know it was the 90s, but there’s always a hangover for the first few years. The headpiece makes her look more ethereal, but I always loved her gorgeous, naturally voluminous hair.
With pic of Bobby and Whitney having their wedding dance,yo are reading too much into it.he is just putting his arms around his wife.He did not put her hands behind her back, she did that!! Jeez stop reaching!!
ReplyDeleteThey say love is blind but the neighbours arent. Whitney really loved Bobby and had faith in the holy matrimorny thinking it would work and it was for ever. As every young girl dreams of that when I marry it would be for ever. Abuse came in due to drugs( I assume) and she thought maybe if I do it with him it will save my marriage. The Leo spirity of I can make it work and will not give up. Eventually she realised that she had done all she could and could not stay in a toxic marriage, Can you imagine how hard it must have been for her to face the world after all that had transipired in her marriage? Realising that she was destroying her own life by staying in that relationship.Rest in piece Whitney , you will always be in our hearts and we will alwyas love you. At least now you can rest. You will be missed.
ReplyDeleteI know how it turned out later-everyone does. But Whitney never looked happier or more radiant than she did during the good times with Bobby. Same with him. The networks keep showing that video when he was released from one of his seeming never-ending jail stints...Whitney literally leapt in his arms and wrapped her legs tightly around his waist and her arms around his neck...clinging for dear life. There was SOMETHING that kept those two together as long as they did...and I don't believe it was only sex and drugs. There is a great movie or book out there on this couple somewhere down the line someday. R.I.P Whitney.
ReplyDeleteWhitney houston is great. I love her very first record. She did a fine job playing cinderella fairy godmother in rodgers and hammersteins cinderella. She had a nice classy wedding and a cute baby. Congradualations whitney houston on all your outstanding success. Your 1 fan.
ReplyDeletei think hiding your hair IS an odd choice at the wedding!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't a fan of the headpiece, but it did draw attention to her pretty face. And I love the purple and lavender theme, those are my favorite colors too!
ReplyDeleteWhitney was the first singer whose music I really responded to. I'm a child of the Nineties, so obviously the soundtrack to The Bodyguard really struck a chord with me, but I loved her older stuff too, like the Whitney album. I loved her singing talent and so did all my classmates and friends. She was everybody's favorite. Even in the last few years, I kept listening to her and purchasing her music. Her voice is unreal.
Regarding your comment, "I guess Whitney found someone better for party-all-the-time fun"....back in those days, Eddie Murphy was a bigger partier, stronger addict than Bobby Brown. (I remember E.M. was so messed up for his show in Atlanta 1986/7...he showed up an hour late and then walked off stage...and refused to give refunds). My guess is Whitney felt she found a better man. Unfortunately, BB was just good at deception and fooled her (it happens to the best of us...deception by a bad man).
ReplyDeleteI heard Whitney say in an interview that Bobby was her first real boyfriend and first love...First Love can blind us and is extremely difficult to give up. We want to believe in Happily Ever After.
May Whitney rest in the Peaceful Arms of God...she is deserving of her rest.
Big Whitney fan here, I think she is georgous, and I miss her dearly. Just want to point out that Whitney wears wigs, the only place you saw her hair was on the cover of her debut album, the rest of it has been wigs. Whitney's is not bald, she has a thin hair and she didnt' want to fry and color it, she used to joke that she would never be 60 and bald...
ReplyDeleteMay she rest in peace...
At one time Whitney and Bobby really loved each other, something was there they stayed together for 14 years that has to mean something. Whitney was one of the great ones I will always enjoy her music as long as I live. Whitney rest in peace she is in a better place with God's loving arms around her forever.
ReplyDeletenice idea..thanks for sharing....
ReplyDeleteSTOP JUDGING. STOP BLAMING BOBBY FOR WHITNEY MISTAKES.. THIS MAN DIDN'T INTRODUCE HER TO DRUGS. HE WAS THE ONLY ONE REALLY TRYING TO GET HER OFF DRUGS...IF THEY HAD STAY TOGETHER WHITNEY WOULD STILL BE HERE. THE PUBLIC BROKE DOWN THAT MARRIAGE, BY BLAMING BOBBY FOR EVERYTHING. SHAME ON THE WORLD TOO PUT THAT PRESSURE ON HIM...
ReplyDeleteI luved Whitney! Beautiful woman! May her soul RIP. God bless, her mom and baby girl, forever. God dont make mistakes.

Laakea Ocean Wedding just recently had a wedding at the same venue that Bobby Brown occupied last year for his 2nd wedding. https://picasaweb.google.com/109779740264281649021/PattyMikeWedding?authuser=0&feat=directlink
ReplyDeleteOf course, there's a lot of differences from a Laakea wedding than the famous Bobby Brown wedding. The biggest factor is crowd control and noise abatement. From testimonies from the neighbors, it's important to obey the rules of the venue and respect the neighbors; we live here and it's the OHANA way.
