Adorable mini wedding cakes in your own kitchen

I don't know how it's possible that I don't have this:

ADORABLE! My favorite baking blog Baking Bites recently posted this adorable cake mold. It makes tiny tiered cakes - aka wedding cakes without all the excessive frosting and gross-tasting fondant.

Needless to say, Me Wantee!

Apple logo wedding cake

How do you know if someone has an iPhone?

Don't worry, they'll tell you.

Badum-ching

Check out this awesome wedding cake. I presume it's a groom's cake, but who knows.

The friend who shared it with me suggested that it should be rainbow on the inside, and I think that's a great idea. It would be awesome if the inside looked like this:

But layered to look like this

Now DANCE!

Today, it's your turn to tell ME something. Please to explain why this is funny (I am not being a jerk, I just don't know anything about Dr. Who):

Doctor Who Wedding Dance. Funny Surprise!

I found this cute Dr. Who / Stargate cake on the Adventures with Dice blog.

This cake was made custom for Mindy (of the Dice Lover blog) by Cakegoodness, and it even includes her cat playing with dice on the lowest tier. Geek-tastic!

That's all for today - I look forward to someone's explanation of the wedding dance!

Kay

Awesome Bioshock wedding

Bioshock was an absolutely beautiful video game, so it's no surprise that a creative couple themed parts of their wedding on the art deco-style visuals.

Actual Bioshock

The invitation

The cute couple - Anna and Jon (and their Flickr account)

Their gorgeous cakes - checkerboard cupcakes topped with butterflies

The cake topper - Big Daddy and Little Sister
Gorgeous! If you go through the rest of the photos on Flickr, this was a really beautiful wedding.

Interactive cake patent from Disney

Did you see my new tattoo over at the Knuckle Tattoo blog?

In case you are dense: this is not really a picture of me.

In the latest (old) news, Disney filed a patent for 'interactive cakes' along with a drawing of their idea.

...[Disney Imagineers have cooked up] a US patent
application lovingly titled "Projector systems and methods for producing
digitally augmented interactive cakes and other food products." The application
includes a set of hilarious illustrations depicting over-sized cameras
projecting images and video onto the surface of baked goods in order to promote
storytelling and / or interactivity that is unique and individualized.

Disney envisions images mapped to the 3D topography of
the cake allowing it to sense, for example, when a slice is in the process of
being cut (initiating a sword fight with Captain Hook) or removed (water rushes
in to fill the void). While we doubt that you'll find these in the aisles of
your local Best Buy grocer anytime soon, you might want to check for
availability the next time that you book a birthday party at a Disneyland
resort. Something tells us that these could be a hit with the
youngins.

Forget the youngins, [in my best Huell Howser impression] I think this sounds simply amazing! These cakes would probably be crazy expensive at first, but those first few people will be pioneers in the cake world.

A commenter at Stitch Kingdom linked to this YouTube video of a wedding cake with abstract imagery projected onto it.

This is a very cool first step, and a high-tech way to spruce up an otherwise plain (though delicious) white cake. I personally cannot wait to see a Haunted Mansion wedding cake where crypt doors creak and tombstones actually quake.

Are you as excited about cake technology as I am?!

Juggalo wedding

How much do you know about the Insane Clown Posse? For the uninitiated, here's my limited understanding: the Insane Clown Posse (or ICP) is a born-again Christian rap band that dresses like clowns and has a ravenous fan base called "juggalos". Juggalos seem to be a kind of second brother/sisterhood for outcasts, weirdies, and other people who don't fit in with normie stuff.

This is a Yahoo Answers question from "Metalette Razy" asking for suggestions for her Hatchet-themed wedding. Hatchets are an ICP thing (I've been told).

Click the image for a larger view

Not surprisingly, people are rude to her and generally tell her nothing helpful, but rather that she's an idiot and her marriage won't last. Sounds like the Internet.

I'm not certain that this photo is related, but it might be related to the woman asking for help with her Hatchet wedding:

An Insane Clown Posse wedding cake with Faygo soda (a fave of the ICP fans), a butcher knife, Juggalo/ette cake topper, and little hatchets adorning the cakes.

I don't fully understand the ICP thing, and I'm terrified of clowns, but I love this crazy cake, and crazy themed weddings in general.

If you're still intrigued by ICP weddings, check out this video. It's not particularly eventful, but it looks like everyone is having fun. If you need a group of fierce friends, it seems like you should become an ICP fan.

Want to learn more about the Insane Clown Posse? Listen to this ICP lecture given by Jenny. She knows a lot about a lot of things.

CAKE IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS

This is how I feel all the time:

With apologies to Hyperbole and a Half

How long has it been since I posted cake porn? Well, the dry spell has passed. CAKE:

Look at this gorgeous cake with white-on-white branches and fat peonies. I seriously want to, like, lick this cake. And rub my face all over the peonies. I wonder if they're fondant?

I like the cake sans-topper too. This is a really nice, balanced design, and the white cake stand compliments it so well.

Now, to completely change theme, here's a Giger-inspired Alien cake.

It's so creepy, and yet comical with the little dudes on top in their wedding finery. Topless Robot calls this post "In cake no one can hear you scream"

Still in the mood for geeky stuff? How about this adorable Pac-Man cake. Pac-Man is really making a comeback right now; I feel like he's showing up everywhere. This cake features Mr. and Mrs. Pac-Man on top with ghosts along the sides of the tiers. I wonder if there are cherries on the back?
Suggestion for anyone making a Pac-Man cake - use cherries for the filling. Ha!
The Domestic Scientist made this cake for a friend's wedding. Sadly, she says that the cake dry, but I'll bet that most people were just bummed out about pooping green the day after eating this. Ever eaten a cake with black food coloring?
I'm not super girly, but this cake brings out the parasol-toting, frilly dress wearing side of me. It's so beautiful and ruffly and pretty. WANT.
I loooove the rounded edges of the tiers, the Victorian off-white cake plate, and the soft, simple flowers. It doesn't say if the cake is frosting or fondant. I hope it's frosting. Imagine that smell. Mmm...cake.
Are there any grown men who don't love Batman? I don't know of any, so I'll assume that this is the wedding cake of every man's dreams.
This cake has Batman, Catwoman, Joker, Poison Ivy, Penguin (Mr. Cobblepot, I presume?), and Harley running around the blood-spattered streets of Gotham City.

I'm full.

Futurama wedding cake

GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE! Someone made this beautiful Futurama wedding cake.

Fry looks respectable, Leela looks pretty, Bender is wearing a bow tie, Professer Farnsworth looks confused, and Nibbler is turning flower petals into dark matter poop. I'm really sad that Doctor Zoidberg isn't present, but he probably did that sideways-walking "woob-woob-woob" thing that makes me laugh EVERY TIME, and Hermes probably got too high and forgot to get dressed for the wedding.

If you look at the photos on Alanosaur's Flickr account, you'll see the Planet Express on the back.

Thankfully, Seymour (the saddest dog ever) isn't on the cake...

Yet another post about spooky wedding cakes

I hope you still like cake, dear reader, because I almost never tire of the topic.

Look at this beautiful Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein cake. The towering tiers with chocolate ganache dripping down the sides are simple and elegant, but still a little gruesome.

This Autumn Wedding Cake is harvest-themed and while it's not gorey and bloody, it is very beautiful and evokes Fall so well. The execution of the pumpkins and the leaves is perfect.

This wedding cake is so relevant to my interests, that I teared up a little when I found it.

I don't understand how it's edible, and I don't care.

A Haunted Mansion wedding cake. It doesn't really look like a cake, but it does look like the Haunted Mansion. Charm City Cakes (made famous via Ace of Cakes and Corey and John's wedding) made it, and I love it more than I can possibly say.

So, are you ready for this weekend - the final weekend of Halloween activities? It's always bittersweet when another October comes to a close...

More wedding cakes that I'll never eat

Finishing the week of cakes, here are more cakes that I long to eat. There's no theme, these are just cakes that I thought were especially beautiful.

A steampunk wedding cake

To me, this steampunk obsession came out of left field, but I thoroughly embrace the trend. Everything about it is so beautiful and metal-y! This cake is no exception. I'm amazed at the metallic colors and precision of the gears.

A Scrabble cake with a cute backstory.

The bride and groom used to play together over the internet while the groom was stationed in Iraq. Aw! Even without the story, it's gorgeous! I love the colors, the wood-effect on the tiles, and the crazy Scrabble tiles bouncing off the edges.

No week-of-cakes from me would be complete without a Tim Burton wedding cake.

I wonder if Tim Burton has inspired more tattoos or weddings? Who cares, his work is always visually stunning. This is the same baker who made the Scrabble cake above. Normally, I think the uneven tiers are overused, but it's perfect here. I like the airbrushing mixed with the hard edges of fondant, and they've used the crazy-things-bouncing-off-the-cake effect here too with blue butterflies and dragonflies. It's almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

And now I have a bad case of cake blue balls. I WANT CAKE SO MUCH. I know exactly how this cat feels:

Have a sugary weekend!

Video game cakes

There are a few Nintendo cakes that are always popular around the 'tubes, but I've found a few video game cakes that you might not have seen.

An upside-down Tetris cake

This cake is a classic Nintendo cartridge. The tetronimoes around the edges are a nice touch, and a clever way to add some color to gray cake. It would be nice to see the other side. Are there metal contacts?

A cutesy wedding cake themed on Zelda's The Wind Wakers

I remember playing this game - it was the first Zelda game for the GameCube. How I loved the GameCube. The cake is set up as an island with the bottom tier representing the sea. It's beautiful!

A Katamari cake

There's no clue given as to how you would cut into this cake, but it's happy and pretty anyway. It's so funny how Katamari has been incorporated into so many weddings.

I've saved the best for last. This Mario wedding cake is just amazing.

The photo's angle really adds to the Super Mario Galaxy aspect of the cake, and all the little details of the cake show how geeky the couple is. There's a castle, a rainbow road, chomps, stars, turtle shells...!!! This is a beautiful cake. The part that really gets me is the cake topper. Did you notice that little Mario is standing on a question mark block to reach Peach for their first kiss. Aw!

Hungrily,
Kay

Week of cakes

It's not that I'm bitter or holding on to terrible disappointment*, but last month I went to a wedding that didn't serve cake. No cake at all. I was so let down, especially since I'd travelled a long way to watch two people get married and to eat cake. Friends, serve cake at your wedding. Even if you think you're being different, you're not. Different is not getting married. If you get married, you are officially just like everyone else, and therefore should serve cake. My logic is flawless.

That logical bit of advice brings us to the first installment of cakes - Star Trek cakes. I don't know why I love Star Trek nerds so much. I think it's because I see them as the underdogs. To dress up like a Klingon in public is to say Fuck the world! I'm the biggest dork ever, and I don't care if dorks think I'm a dork. I heartily respect that.

This is a three-tiered Star Trek insignia cake. It doesn't look very appetizing because gray is not the best color for cakes, but I still think it's cool. It's kind of traditional while not being very traditional at all.

This is a classic cake with a geeky cake topper

I don't understand what the groom is supposed to be, but the bride is obviously Klingon. I think Klingon women are desirable to geeks because geeks picture these sexually aggressive she-beasts with an insatiable desire for nerd blood. I have an insatiable desire for cake, and this pretty mocha-colored cake looks delicious. It looks like buttercream, so I'll bet it smells good too.

This is my favorite because it hits all the Star Trek geek points.

On the left are tribble cupcakes, the cake on the right has the Starfleet logo with photos of the couples' geeky adventures around the edge, and the cake at the top has the Enterprise (?) bridge with two characters in classic costume and the words "Make it so". I can't help but giggle. Oh, nerds, I love you so.

Stay tuned for more delicious cake this week!

Snarking on wedding photos

These are the photos that leave me undecided.

You know I'm a fan of all things spooky wedding, so I'm torn over this cake. Part of me loves the gorey cake with the romantic-macabre message, but the other part thinks that the execution is too gross.

I'm also a fan of doing as you please, showing off what you have, and generally not giving a fig what anyone thinks, but this bride is doing it distastefully. If I had giant boobs, I'd probably show them off too, but not in a way that would constantly have my dad and uncles hiding their faces. Her boobs look precariously perched on those little triangles of fabric, and not in a sexy way.

Finally, I think it's silly to wear unbearable uncomfortable shoes, but not to this end. TheLovelyBride.com sells "comfortable wedding shoes" for the low, low price of $159.95. There are other models that are equally ugly, but I noticed that they only sell one color, and the sizes don't run true. For $160, I want cute and comfortable shoes.

Wedding cake shop scammed

A wedding cake shop in Washington fell victim to a weird internet scam. Basically, someone ordered a wedding cake via email, and gave the bakery a credit card number for the $2500 charge. The scammers asked the bakery to wire $980 through Western Union for the shipping charges, and then the cake was never picked up. It is assumed that the credit card used to pay the $2500 was a stolen card.

Not that I don't feel bad for them, but COME ON! Don't wire money through Western Union to someone you don't know or trust. It's not difficult! If someone wants you to wire money, they are a scammer. Period. Full stop. Etc.

In the above video, they show the email. The email was written in Comic Sans and I saw "God Bless You". Maybe it's just me, but whenever I read a somewhat legitimate looking email that is repeatedly blessing me, I KNOW it's a scammer. Come on, bakery, use your spidey sense! And if anyone ever sends me an email in Comic Sans they are forever banished to my junk box.

This is a hell of a weird scam. I would never think to target bakeries. The nice part of this story is that the unclaimed wedding cake was donated to a rescue mission - some hungry people got to eat some really good cake.

Fish in a wedding cake? That's just wrong.

This is so wrong, for so many reasons.

First, it's just an ugly cake. Why is the coral (seaweed?) blue? I also hate the haphazard shells all over the place. Then, instead of the columns, they used champagne glasses to prop up the top tier? It's kind of a cute idea, but it's poorly executed.

What the what? Look at those sad little fish in the glasses. First, you should not use live animals as decorations. Yes, I'm probably a hypocrite in this area because I eat fish and meat, but I do not use animals for my visual pleasure (unless it's DEEP SEA on Blu-ray because that blows my mind!) because it seems like an asshole thing to do. Second, if you are going to use animals for your visual pleasure, at least make it visually pleasing. Poor Betta fish are usually the victims of the fish-for-decoration trend, but these are ten cent guppies. They're ugly. Everything is ugly.

Humph!

Beautiful modern wedding cakes

Since it's Friday, let's look at some beautiful cakes found via Swanky Tables. They all look like they came from Anthropologie, but we won't hold that against them.

I love the tall-and-skinny style with uneven tiers - it's so unusual, yet simple.

I think this cake is beautiful, but it looks so precarious. I'm sure there is some story behind it, but I really don't understand why the cake is resting on a vase filled with dead tree.

This one is pretty, but all I can see is the Twitter bird, and a bunch of olives.

This is like monochromatic Legos, so I love it. I love geometric shapes and patterns.

While this cake is very feminine, I don't feel that it is twee. The strong, square cake really balances out all those delicate fondant blooms.

What do you think? I think I need some cake now. Again, I wish they'd tell you what kind of cake is inside. A cake could be the most beautiful thing ever, but if I find out that it's lemon and cherry with pistachio filling, I lose all desire to taste it.

Happy weekend!
